AS I WAITED IN LINE to pick up my cellphone, Kerri walked into the station. I nearly leapt for joy at seeing a friendly face.

“Kerri!” I called out. “You came!”

She saw me, winced out a smile, and came rushing over, her arms open wide. “It’s so awful about Tad. I came as soon as I heard.”

“Thanks. I ... I don’t know what happened. But I’m pretty sure the police think I did it.”

“Seriously?” Kerri said. “Why?”

“Who’s this?” a voice sounded behind me. I turned to see Officer McNulty eyeing Kerri.

Kerri straightened to her full height. “I’m Kerri Middleton.”

McNulty’s eyebrow angled upward slightly. “And your relationship to Ms. Diller?”

“Work colleague. And friend.”

“Right,” he said. “Would you mind stepping inside my office for a moment?”
